About us

The Trauma Primary Care Unit at the Trauma Hospital in Brno provides diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients whose health has been impaired by recent and older injuries, including specialized care for complicated post-traumatic conditions.

Based on the high level of expertise of the care provided, patients from all over the country are treated in our departments. Therefore, it can be stated that the department has maintained a supra-regional level. The largest spectrum of patients is due to sports and work injuries, followed by injuries caused by traffic accidents and recreational activities. A large number of patients also seek our specialist care as a result of dealing with serious post-accident complications.

Of course, interdisciplinary cooperation with other departments in the Trauma Hospital (departments of surgery, orthopaedics, imaging methods, follow-up rehabilitation care) is a matter of course.

Performed performances

General and sports traumatology

The focus of our professional interest is expert and specialized patient care:

  • with fresh and older injuries to one (monotrauma) and more parts of the body (combined injuries and polytrauma), including standard and intensive care, conservative and surgical care and rehabilitation care in the context of injury recovery.
  • with serious and life-threatening injuries (polytrauma), including patients with spinal injuries (spondylo-surgery).
  • elderly people with injuries due to falls, whose treatment is very difficult both medically and socially (gerontotraumatology).
  • in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries with a focus on progressive methods of treatment of bone injuries - osteosynthesis
    • complex treatment of severe closed and open fractures
    • tactics for treating floating hip, knee, elbow joints
    • determination of indications for change of osteosynthetic method in treatment of fractures
    • treatment of multiple limb injuries
  • in the treatment of sports injuries and their consequences, with a focus on minimally invasive surgical methods, including arthroscopy of large joints (salvage and reconstructive surgery)
    • arthroscopy of the knee joint
    • arthroscopy of the shoulder joint
    • arthroscopy of the ankle joint
    • arthroscopy of the elbow joint
    • hip arthroscopy
    • arthroscopy of the wrist
    • arthroscopy of the subtalar joint
  • the specific programme focuses on the treatment of cartilage defects and transplantation of menisci and ligaments of large joints

For the treatment of all injuries we have modern diagnostic methods and high-quality domestic and foreign implants for the repair of bone fractures (osteosynthesis) and joint injuries, including gentle arthroscopic methods.

Septic and reconstructive traumatology

Focus of septic and reconstructive traumatology:

  • treatment of aseptic and infected rhonchi
  • treatment of bone, joint and soft tissue infections
  • treatment of septic complications of osteosynthesis
  • plastic reconstruction of soft tissue defects, local and microsurgical flaps
  • reconstructive procedures on bones, bone defect replacements, limb prolongation, segmental transport
  • complex treatment after replantations

Workplace equipment

The Department of Traumatology and Sports Traumatology has aseptic operating theatres and a septic operating theatre for patients with inflammatory complications. For patients with serious medical conditions, there is an ARO (anaesthesiology and resuscitation department) and ICU A (intensive care unit), while stable patients are treated in standard wards (Traumatology A and B without inflammatory complications, or Surgery B with inflammatory complications). Patients come to the ward via the outpatient tract (standard trauma outpatient clinics and specialist outpatient clinics). The Department of Traumatology and Sports Traumatology provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care, including preoperative preparation and postoperative care for trauma patients. For rehabilitation, there is a rehabilitation and aftercare department, follow-up rehabilitation in outpatient mode, or cooperation with other rehabilitation institutes is used. The hospital's instrumentation allows access to all modern examination methods (X-ray, CT including 3D, sonographic examination, angiographic examination, MRI is solved in cooperation with other departments).

Information for patients

Traumatology at the Trauma Hospital in Brno belongs to the top workplaces dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. In order to achieve the best possible results, modern methods such as the latest fracture treatment procedures are used in accordance with technical developments (osteosynthesis), as well as minimally invasive methods of joint treatment (arthroscopy).

Sports traumatology

Our patients include many with injuries sustained during recreational and elite sports.

Sports injuries can include both so-called minor injuries (distortion = sprain) and more serious injuries (fractures, dislocations, etc.). Our aim is to investigate and treat these injuries to enable patients to return not only as quickly as possible, but also in the best possible condition to full pre-injury life.

We cooperate with many sports clubs and individual athletes in our region. Our patients include many athletes who have achieved significant success after having their injuries treated at our clinic, including world champions in various sports.

An important issue is also the treatment of health problems of so-called former athletes, whose health problems appeared after the end of their sports career. After careful examination and subsequent treatment, we enable these patients to return to an active lifestyle and recreational sports.

Our doctors specialize in treating acute sports injuries and reconstructive surgeries for chronic health problems such as chronic instability of the knee, shoulder, and ankle joints, meniscus reconstructive surgeries (meniscus transplants), and replacements of cartilage defects in joints.

The results of our work are presented at national and international professional meetings and in the literature.
